I am indebted to Stuart Wilkinson
for this impressive picture of this incident in a former mill. It was a
very notable incident for Stuart who attended as Fire Investigation Officer.
It was to be the last incident he attended as he reitred at 1700 on the
next day after a career spanning 36 years in uniform which began in the
Auxiliary Fire Service in 1966 and then, following the abolition of the
AFS in 1968, continued as a retained Fireman/Leading Fireman at Atherton
Fire station which back then was a part of Lancashire County Fire Brigade.
At the same time, Stuart worked full-time at Worsley Workshops as a mechanic
for five and a half years. His final position before he retired in 2002
was as Commander of Whitefield Fire Station, a post he held for the last
thirteen and a half years of his service.
This picture remains copyright
to Stuart.
